2 Timothy 1:6-7 (ESV)
For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
Paul’s great line, ‘fan into flame the gift on your life’ is preceded by the statement, ‘for this reason….
This reason is in the verse just before it. Paul identifies that the faith Timothy has was first in his grandmother and then his mother and now in him.
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well
The point: your life, my life, is not lived in a vacuum, we are not islands, we do not live and die to ourselves. Our lives have been shaped and influenced by the choices, decisions and sacrifices of the generations that have gone before us. We owe it to them and to God to be a good and faithful steward of what has been entrusted to us. Our gifts.
Let’s not waste them but rather fan then into flame! The generations that will follow us may just be dependent on it!
What if the intensity of the fire within your spirit was going to be the measuring stick the next generation uses for their level of passion & dedication. That’s a sobering thought.
